The Memorial

This bunker was the first to be cleared by the association in order to become a memorial to honour the Suffolk Regiment.   A plaque has been erected close to the entrance and an orientation table has been positioned on the roof of the fortification.  The association organises its exhibitions in this bunker.

The R605 bunker was an unusual type in the atlantic wall (there are only two examples in France), which served as a garage for the anti-tank guns or for vehicles.   Today there are only five models of this type left in Europe.   The construction of this model necessitated an excavation of 1600 m3 of earth and required 900m3 of concrete and 45 tons of iron.

The R605 comprises three rooms, with two chambers closed off by an armoured, sliding door and a shelter for the gunners (2).

This unique example of an economical concept using breeze blocks is  connected by a concrete ramp situated at the side of the road.    Only the chamber to the left was fitted with a wooden door whilst awaiting an armoured, sliding door.   The chamber to the right seems to have served as storage for materials.   Note the presence of a Tobrouk firing position(4) on the right hand side of the fortification, which provides protection.

The aerial photographs seem to show that an earth entrenchment had been planned nearby to accommodate a gun.   A store-room has been cleared close to this site.
