The Wells

In order to ensure an independent water supply for this position, the Germans bored an artesian well, several dozen metres deep. The water was brought up with the help of a pump situated in a room, shifted from the entrance, all of it protected by a strong layer of concrete (80cm). However, the water from the well wasn’t drinkable!

The photograph to the left shows a crater caused after the war by a munitions explosion. The lower right hand section, normally covered in earth, protects the bore hole and the pump. The higher section to the left, which is at ground level, is level with the entrance.

The photo to the right, recently taken from the same angle, gives an idea of the original appearance.
